Commenting on the conviction yesterday of Mick Bates AM for public order offences, Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:
“Mick Bates has been a dedicated and effective voice for Montgomeryshire over many years. This judgement is a personal tragedy for him and his family but it is one we must respect.
“The Welsh Liberal Democrats are clear that this conviction for a public order offence is incompatible with the high standards we expect of our elected representatives. Proceedings have begun to terminate his membership of the party.”

It is surely enough punishment that Mick will not be able to participate in Welsh Assembly matters from now on. Taking the party membership away from a true liberal democrat and our most high-profile green campaigner is just pandering to the media.
"Pandering to the media??" This man has been convicted of attcking medical staff and so has no further rights to represent Montgomeryshire in the Senedd.
He should resign immediately - not wait until the next elections. He is a disgrace.
What Mick did was totally out of character and the staff involved do not seem to have suffered any lasting injuries. Those leading public figures who endangered other road users while driving too fast, under the influence or using hand-held mobile phones did not suffer any punishment other than that prescribed by law.
