Government’s attitude on biofuels crude and simplistic

Commenting on last week's Environmental Audit Committee report on the sustainability of biofuels, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Steve Webb said:

“Biofuels must not damage the environment they are meant to protect.

“The early rush towards biofuels failed to take into account their wider environmental impact and the Government’s current policy is far too crude and simplistic to change this.

“European targets must not incentivise the production of unsustainable biofuels and the Government must act now to prevent this from happening.

“What is needed is an international policy which discourages the use of damaging biofuels, without undermining the promotion of sustainable ones.”

I'm wondering if any one has noticed that the price of cooking oil has increased; cheap veg oil used to cost around 50 pence per litre; now the cheapest veg oil is just under £1 per litre.

Are people using it in their Diesel cars or is it being bought up on the commodity exchanges for bio-diesel?

I'm told you can detect the use of cooking oil by the smell of the exhaust. ;-)

Thats very true Frank, it stinks - even worse than petrol or diesel exhaust - if you can believe that. I was driving behind a car the other day on the A465 that was obviously using vegetable oil - it did stink. Even more remarkable, he was advertising the fact with huge stickers in his rear windscreen and along side the body of the car!
