An Orwellian step too far

Commenting on the Government’s plans for a giant database of electronic information which would hold details of every phone call and email sent in the UK, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"Ministers have taken leave of their senses if they think that this proposal is compatible with a free country and a free people.

"Given their appalling track record of data loss, this Government simply cannot to be trusted with such private information."

The question is what are they going to do with this information, there's an expression which goes along the lines "information rich, knowledge poor!

There are only a few thousand intelligence officers in the UK; I take it they aren’t going to spend their time chasing after people who google “electromagnetic pulse device”, “pipe bomb”, “sodium chlorate”, “anthrax”, “ricin”, “plague”, “nutrient broth” or any other dubious phrase or word.

The one advantage the government as got on the war on terror in the UK is the poor standard of science education in the UK; once upon a time your average 16 year old was capable of producing something nasty in a test tube or demijohn, but not any more!
