Commenting on the call from within the Labour movement for the party to unite behind membership of the Single Market and the Customs Union, Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat Shadow Brexit Secretary, said:
“It is time for the Labour Party to start acting in the interests of the whole country. Staying in the Single Market and Customs Union would be a major step away from Theresa May’s damaging extreme Brexit.
“Labour’s division and confusion over Brexit only acts to show the contempt for the EU that their leadership holds. They are the ones who told the party to march through the voting lobbies in support of the Conservatives’ extreme Brexit plans.
“It is clear that their support for Theresa May’s plans is helping to cause major economic damage. The sensible voices in the party must be listened to.”
