Encouraging younger citizens

Jo Swinson (LibDem) is one of the sponsors of a parliamentary Bill to lower the voting age to 16. More here.

This will not necessarily result in higher percentage turnouts, but is the right thing to do for a group of citizens who are almost certainly better informed than their grandparents were.

What would improve the democratic process is for the age limit for membership of community councils to be reduced in line.

I seriously think you're on to something here!

If 16 year olds, who are working, are forced to pay tax then they should also have the right to decide, in an election, who they entrust that tax revenue to be managed and distributed by.

Its a simple case of inclusive politics. You cannot expect somebody to contribute and not have a say about how that contribution will be disseminated.

You can sign up to join the army at 16, but you can't buy a girly mag!

The Bill was talked out in the end. No doubt conservative politicians feared the effects of more radical-leaning youth on their re-election prospects.
